However, Nicola feared she wouldn’t make it past the first episode after getting off on the wrong foot – quite literally – on her first day.

During an appearance on The One Show on Tuesday, host Jermaine Jenas asked: “Is it right you had a little problem putting the heels on?”

Nicola replied: “Oh just a tad, just a tad. So Ellen Mirojnick [the show’s costume designer] on season one said ‘you’re tiny, you’re too small so we’re gonna put you in heels’.

“And I was just terrified to get fired because I couldn’t believe my luck at getting the job. I said ‘yes, absolutely’.”

She added: “So I agreed to wear these crazy heels, and then on my first day on set we were walking around and I toppled over not once, not twice, but three times.

“Three times, and I thought they’re going to think I’m drunk, they’re gonna think I’m crazy, and I was holding a dog at the time.”

Nicola – who also plays Clare in hit Channel 4 comedy Derry Girls – was quick to reassure viewers the pooch was unharmed.

She continued: “They very quickly realised that that was a no-go, so no more heels for Penelope, sadly!”

Nicola also told Jermaine and co-host Lauren Laverne how she had ruined big moments in season one for her friends and family.

While most stars keep spoilers under their hats, Nicola told her nearest and dearest that Penelope was the mysterious Lady Whistledown before it was revealed at the end of the first season.

She said: “I just told all my friends and family and they were all fuming with me, and they were like ‘it really ruined the end of it because we just knew’.”

Bridgerton season two premieres on Netflix on March 25, while season one is available now.
