GRAND Designs viewers were left horrified by a “vile” property transformation which cost a staggering £1.7m.
Channel 4 presenter Kevin McCloud joined couple Colin and Adele in south Manchester as they attempted to turn their modest home into a luxury curved mansion.
The couple – who share kids Billy and Polly – had purchased the property eight years ago and began converting the property two years later.
However, film producer Colin and wife Adele ran into trouble, as their project became more adventurous.
The couple had plans for a glass and wood curved structure, with a coveted entrance leading to a generous kitchen, bathroom and a spiral staircase.
Unconventionally, they wanted four bedrooms connected by living spaces, a huge games room and bar, cinema and a quiet snug.

There was also plans for another spiral staircase to enter Colin and Adele’s retreat, with a wet room and yoga room and 40 solar panels on the roof.
With a budget of £700k, it proved to be a complex project and the couple faced a number of hurdles.
But Grand Design viewers were left more distracted by the couple’s shocking design and likened it to a public library.
One wrote: “Planners….what goes on in their heads. #GrandDesigns”
Another posted: “Wouldn’t want to be their neighbours with that towering over the house, it’s an eyesore. #GrandDesigns”
A third commented: “Most vile house I’ve seen on #GrandDesigns for some time. Looks like a cheap 60s town library.”
“#GrandDesigns It’s an ugly looking house,” another echoed.
Someone else chimed in: “Curves and cantilevers, what could go wrong? #GrandDesigns”
Another added: “Wonder what the neighbours reckon to that public library being built next door. #GrandDesigns”
After six weeks, the foundations were done but they soon ran into trouble, with a structural problem costing another £30,000 and a four month delay.
Colin was hit with more delays, with builders failing to return to complete the job after taking the couple’s deposit.
After hiring local builders, the roof was finally installed and 50 double glazed glass panels were also fitted, including numerous curved panels.
After various setbacks, they had finally turned a corner and the property was complete.
“It’s so different to every building in this part of the world,” Kevin exclaimed upon seeing the finished property.
The home had plenty of storage, a huge staircase, extensive natural lighting and cosy spaces.
The property also boasted a games room for the kids to enjoy when they return home.
Although they set out to pay £700k initially, they ended up paying a grand total of £1.7m.
